Fans of co-op first-person shooter games are no strangers to the Payday series. The dynamic leveling system and various heists keep you on your toes, making the series a blast to play. So, here’s some good news for you Payday fans out there – we’re getting Payday 3. Stick around if you’re excited to read the latest Payday 3 news and its potential release date!
A quick recap on the franchise: Payday 1 and Payday 2
If you’ve played Left 4 Dead or seen Point Break, it’s not that hard to wrap your head around both Payday 1 and Payday 2. In Payday 1, you plus a company of three get six different jobs, ranging from a bank heist, breaking a prisoner out, to a get-away from a job gone wrong.
Much like in other co-ops, Payday 2 is only as great as the crew you’re playing with. It’s exactly like a bank heist – if your crew is sloppy, the heist will be sloppy too. And trust us, you don’t want that. Unless you’re hoping to book a full suite in San Quentin. In that case, just remember there’s no minibar to snack away your problems.
Will there be a Payday 3?
The answer to that question is yes! Finally, after so many years spent waiting, we got some long overdue Payday 3 news. In fact, Starbreeze Studios and Overkill Software revealed some juicy details during the Payday 10th Anniversary live stream event.
What we know so far about Payday 3
Even though there’s no official Payday 3 trailer (yet), we still managed to find some juicy tidbits. Payday 3’s gameplay is set a few years after the events that took place in Payday 2. Characters like Dallas, Chains, Hoxton, and Wolf are also featured, as the rascals go back to their criminal ways once more. On top of that, software giants, cryptocurrency, mass surveillance, and the dark web will all have a role to play in Payday 3, perhaps in the form of updated gadgets. Thank you, Starbreeze.
While Payday 1 took place in fictional Newport City and Miami, and Payday 2 in Washington, DC, Payday 3 takes place in the “living, enormous representation” of New York City according to director Erik Wonnevi.
Brace yourselves – according to Starbreeze, Payday 3 is set to release on PC and consoles at the same time in 2023, but with some additional content and functionalities.
Although Starbreeze didn’t show any cinematics or gameplay from Payday 3 during the live stream event, we did find out that the newest addition to the Payday series will be developed in Unreal Engine, unlike its predecessors’ Grin engine. Also, Wonnevi argued that this engine will allow players to experience the fantasy of New York in a whole new light and watch as it slowly flips into chaos and reacts to decisions the players make as a heist crew.
Now that we’ve covered what we know about Payday 3, here’s what fans want to see in Payday 3:
Some fans pointed out that slower gameplay makes you think more strategically. You take more time to figure out your next move, and that’s something they would like to see in Payday 3.
Instead of a generic set of possibilities, we’d like to be able to spend some resources in order to get the actual layout of a particular stage. Also, maybe being able to start a heist with the necessary tool where we already know we’ll encounter a specific obstacle.
Revamp to stealth mechanics
We all agree that stealth missions are really enjoyable. Having to start a 20-minute stealth mission all over again because of one mistake, on the other hand, not so much.
Improved team AI
The team AI in Payday 1 was pretty basic, and as such only mimicked basic real-player functionalities like attacking, alerting the player of special enemies, and reviving allies. Its successor, on the other hand, featured several tweaks – like being able to attack law enforcement, following the player around the map, and marking special enemies. Honestly, we’re sort of hoping Starbreeze keeps the tweak streak going. Adding a sneakier, or more unpredictable AI would result in more engaging gameplay.
Latest info on Payday 3 release
To sum up, there’s no official news when Payday 3 will come out. Not even a Payday 3 trailer to help us pass the time, which is pretty unfortunate. There is, however, a release time window set for 2023. Looks like we’ll have to wait a little while longer.
No matter when it comes out, we’re hoping Payday 3 will be a great addition to the Payday series. Starbreeze has all the tools to take advantage of the fact that so much time has passed since Payday 2. Cryptocurrency, the dark web, mass surveillance would all make for a great story in Payday 3.
After all, 2023 is just around the corner. It’s all up to you Starbreeze. Fingers crossed, you won’t disappoint.
