Munchlax – All About the Adorable Baby Snorlax

There’s no doubt that the Pokémon series has always had some pretty cute creatures. From Pikachu himself to Charmander, through Eevee and Shaymin, every generation has an aww-inducing Pokémon. Most of the ones we’ve mentioned are well-known and already famous. However, today we’d like to present a completely new genre of cute. A Pokémon you might not have even known existed. Baby Snorlax.

And we know what you may be thinking. It’s not really a baby Snorlax, is it? Yes. Yes, it is. You can obtain a Munchlax by breeding a Snorlax holding Full Incense. That would, in fact, literally make it a baby Snorlax.

Of course, Munchlax later evolves into Snorlax. We’ll cover the details on that later.

Back to the main point. If we’ve intrigued you with talks of an adorable baby Snorlax and the mystical abilities it possesses, could we perhaps interest you in a little Gastly-style FAQ about Munchlax? If you’re interested in learning more about this Pokémon, keep reading!

All about Munchlax: Abilities and Characteristics

When it comes to Munchlax’s abilities, it sports Normal-type abilities due to being a Normal-type Pokémon. The three abilities Munchlax can learn are Pickup, Thick Fat, and Gluttony.

Pickup lets the baby Snorlax pick up items, and in Generations VII and VIII, they can pick up items opposing Pokémon drop in battle. It’s a pretty neat ability if you’re running low on items in your inventory and need to stock back up. It’s also quite useful for picking up items during battle, as you can use them later on.

Baby Snorlax’s second ability, Thick Fat, essentially gives it protection from Fire- and Ice-type moves. In most cases, this means Munchlax will only take half the damage from these moves. It’s a particularly useful ability for certain strategies and builds.

Gluttony, Munchlax’s hidden move, makes the Pokémon eat a held Berry. In Generations VII and onward, the Pokémon eats it at half HP, when they normally eat it at 25% HP. However, note that this ability does not affect Berries that activate at other HP thresholds.

When it comes to baby Snorlax’s appearance, it sports a teal color with a cream spot on its chest, the lower half of its head, and its feet. The color scheme is very reminiscent of Snorlax. It has two bunny-like ears at the top of its head, with five fingers and three toes. The fur on its lower half is ruffled, giving the appearance of a dress.

Is Munchlax better than Snorlax?

It depends on the game you’re playing. For instance, in Pokémon GO, Snorlax has higher HP and CP than Snorlax. However, due to Munchlax’s bulk, it seems that some Pokémon GO players favor it over Snorlax.

Regardless, it’s hard to imagine Munchlax being better than Snorlax in other games. This is because Snorlax is an evolution of Munchlax. This generally gives off the idea that it’s better than a Munchlax.

Snorlax also sports an ability the baby Snorlax doesn’t have, which is Immunity. Immunity gives Snorlax poison protection, making it more diverse in battle than Munchlax.

How do you evolve Munchlax?

The most common question when it comes to baby Snorlax is how to evolve Munchlax.

Munchlax will only evolve once you’ve reached a high enough friendship level with the Pokémon. You require a friendship stat of 220 or higher for Munchlax to evolve into Snorlax.

Your next question is probably how to increase your friendship with Munchlax. The answer is simple!

Baby Snorlax should always be accompanying you on your adventures. Taking it on a walk increases your friendship stat by 1 every 128 steps. In some versions, you gain +2 friendship by walking 256 steps. It all depends on which Pokémon game you’re playing.

As its name tells, Munchlax is also very appreciative of food. Feeding it healthy food such as vitamins or certain berries can also increase your friendship stat.

Of course, there’s the added requirement of training your Munchlax as often as you can. Once you’ve completed all of these, you can expect your baby Snorlax to evolve into an adult Snorlax!

At what level does Munchlax evolve?

Munchlax does not have a level requirement to level up. All you need is a friendship stat of 220 or higher for Munchlax to evolve into Snorlax!

Don’t worry about leveling your Munchlax; focus on becoming friends with it to get the best results.

When did Baby Snorlax first appear in the Pokémon lore?

The first appearance of baby Snorlax in the franchise was in 2004 when it was revealed as a Generation IV Pokémon.

We don’t know a lot about Munchlax’s first appearance in the Pokémon lore. However, it did appear in several episodes of the animes such as “Berry, Berry, Interesting” and “Harley Rides Again”. It also appeared in Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys as the first Generation IV Pokémon to be featured in it.

Is there a shiny Munchlax?

As of right now, a shiny Munchlax is pretty rare. It exists in Pokémon Legends Arceus, Pokémon Sword and Shield, and Pokémon GO. You can watch this video of Pokémon streamer Rozoken catching it shortly after the game was first released in January 2022.

The shiny Munchlax sports a slightly darker color than the normal version, although the one Rozoken caught seems to have slightly lower stats in Pokémon Legends Arceus.

Munchlax in Pokémon GO

We’ve already talked about some basic stats Munchlax has in Pokémon GO. Its max HP is 242 and its max CP is 2287. However, it also has an ATK of 137, a DEF of 117, and an STA of 286.

You can’t obtain a Munchlax by catching it in the wild, you can only get it from eggs. However, considering Snorlax receives a weather boost when it’s Partly Cloudy, we can assume that Munchlax would be the same.

Finally, Munchlax has a Buddy distance of 5km. This means the baby Snorlax will award you with free candy after walking that distance.

Munchlax in Pokémon Sword and Shield

Unlike Pokémon GO, Munchlax can be caught in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Unfortunately, it’s not all that easy. It only appears under very specific conditions and even then, it has a low spawn rate of 5%.

You can find Munchlax in the Motostoke Riverbank area in the Overworld. If you wander around this area during normal, sunny weather, there will be a 5% chance of Munchlax spawning. Catching Munchlax is yet another story, though.

However, it’s much easier to breed a Snorlax with Full Incense to produce a Munchlax.
